Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz Bio

Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz was born in Poland in 1958.

During his studies at Jagiellonian University (1978-1982), he became involved with the Independent Student Union (Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentów, NZS) and actively participated in its organization. He organized NZS in the Institute of political science in 1981. He was elected to the Congress of the NZS at Jagiellonian University, and became head of the Control Committee (Komisja Rewizyjna). He was also a head of the student radio organized by the NZS at the university and editor of a student magazine “Aplauz.”

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz was interned on December 31st 1981 after Martial Law was introduced in Poland. He was subsequently released from internment in May 1982. He asked for political asylum in the United States of America in May 1982 and immigrated to the USA via West Germany in August 1982.

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz has been working in The New York Public Library since 1987. During the years 1998-2008, he has been working in the Slavic and Baltic Division, Research Library Center, Humanities & Social Sciences Library as Curator of West Slavic Collection, which included Polish, Czech, Slovak, and Sorbian collections.

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz is a member of Local 1930, District 37 of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME)(AFL-CIO).

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz has a Master of Library Science degree from the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences, Queens College in New York City. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland.

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz is a member of the Bergenfield Republican Club. He has been President of the Club from August 2005 till March 2007. He has been a County Committee member for the Bergen County Republican Organization (2003-2004, 2005- ). He is the Municipal Vice-Chairman in Bergenfield. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Polish American Republican Caucus in New Jersey from 2004 till 2006. He became the Vice-President of the Polish American Republican Caucus in the fall of 2006. He ran for the state assembly in District 37 in 2007 and 2009. He is a candidate for the Council in Bergenfield in 2010.

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz joined the Polish American Congress, Northern New Jersey Division in the spring of 2010 and was elected as its National Director.

Mr. Siemaszkiewicz is married and has two sons. He lives in Bergenfield, Bergen County. He is a Roman Catholic.
